How about free calls over the internet (PC-to-PC ) and calls to a fixed phone anywhere in the world at a rate of 2c per minute? Over 246 million people have signed up for Skype, so it’s likely that many people you know already use it. My clients are all over the country and with Skype I am in touch with one click, for free, at better than phone quality – making me so accessible as to be ‘virtually’ working in their offices.
For those MySpace users - Skype will soon offer MySpace members free internet calling services in a bid by both companies to expand their base of users and revenue. Skype’s voice service will be folded into MySpace’s existing instant messaging technology, allowing MySpace members to place free calls to other people on the MySpace and Skype networks.
For PC-to-PC calls there’s no reason to look further than Skype. However, for calls to fixed phones, Skype currently has no Australian presence, which means that any call to an Australian landline requires your call to make a return trans continental journey before arriving at the desired call destination in Australia, which can result in lower call quality. And for calls from an actual physical handset, Skype uses its own proprietary protocol meaning it does not offer interoperability with much of the standards-based hardware available today, or for that matter with other VoIP providers.
